Sacramento, CA – Veterans groups representing millions of veterans across California support Proposition 37, which authorizes $25 billion in revenue bonds to provide low-interest, downpayment assistance loans to eligible middle-class Californians.
Prop 37 requires homebuyers to be California residents, meet income requirements, pay at least 3% down, make monthly payments, and occupy the home as their residence. Annual state audits ensure transparency and financial health, and consumer protections include strict bank fee limits and no early payoff penalty.
“Our organization was established more than 60 years ago to promote the rights and benefits of veterans, and that includes being able to afford where they live after years of dedicated service,” said David West, Chair, California State Commanders Veterans Council. “Prop 37 will help middle-class Californians, including veterans, be able to fulfill the American Dream of homeownership with reasonable down payments that don’t amount to a decade worth of savings.”
Proposition 37 unlocks homeownership for more middle-class families by making it possible to buy a new home, while spurring a wave of new home construction across the state – all at no cost to taxpayers.
“Prop 37 not only provides affordable downpayment assistance, but it helps address California’s housing affordability crisis by incentivizing new single family home construction,” said William Franco, Commander, Veterans Affiliated Council. “Increasing the supply of new homes helps give more veterans the chance to live in a home where they work, and create stability for their family for decades to come.”
“I spearheaded Prop 37 so that the hardworking middle-class families who are the heart of California, could have a chance at homeownership,” said Robert Hertzberg, Prop 37 Proponent and former Speaker of the Assembly and Senate Majority Leader. “I’m proud to have the support of the groups representing millions of men and women who have dedicated their lives. We should at the very least, do a better job at providing them an affordable place to call home.”
