Press Release: Central Coast Organizations Support Prop 37

Sacramento, CA – Organizations and elected officials across the Central Coast have signed on in support of Proposition 37, which will lower the cost of buying a home, with zero cost and zero risk to tax payers.

“For many Californians, the biggest barrier to buying a home isn’t the monthly payment; it’s the down payment,” said Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley. “So many of the teachers, firefighters, nurses and other middle class families who serve our community are forced to commute long distances to work in the South Bay. Prop 37 changes that, and is designed to help working families who earn too much for downpayment assistance programs but still cannot save enough to buy a home.”

In Santa Cruz County, the typical downpayment is $274,000, which would take a middle class Californian decades to save. With Prop 37, that number would be closer to $41,000, making homeownership more attainable.

Under Prop 37, the median down payment in Monterey County would be closer to $27,330. For more info on the downpayment barrier, visit the campaign calculator tool.
