Press Release: AFSCME California People Endorses Prop 37

Sacramento, CA – AFSCME California PEOPLE are the latest major statewide organization to join the growing coalition list in support of Proposition 37.

The measure, which unlocks homeownership for more middle-class families by making it possible to buy a new home with just 3% down, will also spur a wave of new home construction across the state – all at no cost to taxpayers.

“Prop 37 will help unlock homeownership for middle-class working families by making it possible to buy a new home,” said Matthew Maldonado, Chair of AFSCME California PEOPLE. “This measure opens up an opportunity for nurses, emergency responders, mental health professionals, school workers and more who have historically been priced out of homeownership because of unachievable down payment requirements. AFSCME California PEOPLE is proud to support Prop 37 and help usher in a new generation of homeowners.”

Prop 37 authorizes $25 billion in revenue bonds to provide low-interest, downpayment assistance loans to eligible middle-class Californians.

“For many Californians, the biggest barrier to homeownership isn’t the monthly mortgage, it’s the down payment,” said Prop 37 Proponent and Former Speaker of the Assembly and Senate Majority Leader Bob Hertzberg. “This initiative is going to ensure working families can get into the door of home ownership.”

AFSCME California PEOPLE joins other major labor organizations, housing advocates, veterans, business groups and community leaders across California in supporting Proposition 37.
